While It's Here

I’m starting to see the leaves turning.  Just starting.  And that’s a sign that I’m going to begin hearing people telling me that winter is almost here.  That always seems so strange to me because I enjoy fall so much.  And of course it’s not as if they’re looking forward to winter.  I really do understand.  By the time we get what feels like six months of winter I’ve had enough too.  But the bit that comes before winter, from the first green turned to gold, through the first hard frost, all the way to the first dusting of snow that comes and reminds us all that we do indeed live in a northern country, that bit has a beauty all its own.  And forgive me, but I’d rather enjoy it while it’s here.  Specifically because it will be gone soon enough.

Besides, the first snowfall means that spring is closer than it was.  I know, call me weird, but that is truly how I feel.
